Wombless

About the show:
In rural India, thousands of women—many just 25 to 40 years old—have undergone unnecessary or even forced hysterectomies, and suffered early menopause, chronic health issues and lasting trauma as a result. This two-part documentary investigates the issue in Maharashtra and Bihar, to understand the underlying issues —from poverty and cultural beliefs to medical exploitation. We uncover the profiteering behind these procedures and the lack of reproductive health education that leaves women vulnerable. But change is underway. Activists and advocates have fought for reform, culminating in a landmark 2023 Supreme Court directive requiring all hysterectomies to be registered. Will it be enough to end the practice?
